What is battery storage?
A solar battery acts as an energy storage unit, storing electricity generated by solar panels to use after sunset or in the event of our power outage.
Ordinarily when electricity is produced by solar panels that isn’t used immediately by a household, it is sold to the energy grid, where the customer receives what’s known as a feed-in tariff – this income appears as a credit on their energy bill.
Since the energy in a battery can be used at any time, it makes sense to store it for use in the evening when your electricity provider is charging the highest kWh prices.
This will maximise your savings because the income you make selling your excess power to the grid will likely be less than the savings you make using your stored energy.
Power protection when you need it most

Our most commonly asked battery questions
Are batteries a good investment?
Although batteries may seem like they have a higher initial investment, they are absolutely worth it as the benefits they provide over time are tenfold. Batteries enable you to store your own solar power to use at night, ensuring you don’t pull back electricity from the grid that you have to pay for. Further, you can make money from any extra power you have stored.
What is the cost of a battery?
A good quality solar battery starts at approximately $8,000 for 8kW of storage.
Are batteries safe?
Yes, batteries are very safe. In Australia, battery installers must follow the manufacturer’s manual and adhere to very strict installation standards.
Can batteries be installed inside my property?
It is important to maintain adequate airflow and ventilation to your energy storage unit. While airflow may be sufficient indoors, a safer alternative is to install the storage unit outside or in an unoccupied utility building.
How long do batteries last?
At a minimum, batteries should last the duration of their product manufacturing warranty. Most leading battery brands are now focusing on lithium-ion batteries, since they can store energy more efficiently, while lasting much longer.
Do batteries come with a warranty?
Yes, it is a requirement that all batteries sold in Australia come with a product manufacturing and workmanship warranty. At Arkana we offer a 25 year workmanship warranty on all installations. The product and manufacturing warranty depends on the type of battery you install.
I have a battery, will I have power during a blackout?
Yes, a solar battery stores your excess solar power, detecting outages and automatically maintains your household power – up to 3000 watts – during a blackout; keeping critical appliances running without disruption.
