Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to our FAQ guide on solar energy! With rising energy costs in Australia, solar is becoming a go-to solution for saving money and boosting sustainability. Here at Arkana Energy, we’re dedicated to helping you find the best solar options for your needs. Let’s get started!

General Solar Questions:

How does solar work?
Solar panels capture sunlight and convert it into direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter then transforms the DC into alternating current (AC) electricity, which powers your home. Any excess energy can be stored in batteries or sent back to the grid, helping you save even more on your energy bills.

Why should I get solar?
Solar energy is a smart investment which can significantly reduce or eliminate your electricity bills – better yet, it could make you money selling excess power back to the grid. It also gives you more control over your future power needs and potential power cost increases. With Arkana Energy’s tailored solutions, you can also take advantage of generous government rebates and enjoy a system that pays for itself through energy savings. Plus, it’s an easy, no-brainer way to do something positive for the environment – you’re contributing to a more sustainable and stable energy grid.

What is the process to get solar?
Getting solar with Arkana Energy is a breeze. First, we assess your energy needs, roof position, and financial goals. Then, we customise a solar solution for you, help you access rebates and finance, and schedule the installation. Our CEC accredited installers complete the job, and our customer support ensures you get the most from your new system.

Do I need approval from anyone to get solar?
Generally, you’ll need approval from your local council and your electricity distributor. But don’t worry—Arkana Energy takes care of the necessary paperwork and approvals, making the process hassle-free for you.

What does my home need to get solar?
Your home should have a structurally sound roof with enough space to accommodate solar panels. Roof direction and angle also matter, but Arkana Energy will customise a solution that maximises your energy production based on your specific conditions.

What happens to excess energy generated?
Excess energy can either be stored in a solar battery for later use or fed back into the electricity grid. This not only earns you credits on your electricity bill but also contributes to a greener, more sustainable energy system.

How much do I get for selling to the grid?
Feed-in tariffs for selling excess energy to the grid vary by state and retailer. The amount paid for excess electricity varies depending on your solar retailer. Each company will pay a different rate. Some may offer higher feed in tariffs however increase the cost of your daily supply charge. The size of your system will also affect the amount paid for your excess electricity. Arkana Energy will guide you on how to pick the best energy retailer for your system during the solar process.

Is there a limit for how much power I can sell to the grid?
There are often limits applied by the energy distributor on what a single system can export however the amount will vary depending on if you have single phase or 3 phase supply. Different distributors will also allow different amounts. Arkana Energy can guide you through the specifics, ensuring you maximise your returns and get a system size which makes sense for your energy usage and any export limits.

My Bill is under $300, is solar worth it?
Even with a lower electricity bill, solar can still offer long-term savings and energy independence – especially when your system cost is subsidised by government rebates. If you have a small electricity bill, it just means that you may take a couple more years to see the return on your investment. It is also important to remember that power prices are consistently rising and so is our day to day usage. Having a solar system on your home means you are protected from “bill shock” and also helping the environment at the same time. The team at Arkana Energy can review your bill and current energy usage and recommend whether solar makes sense for your home.

What happens during cloudy days or at night?
Solar panels are less effective during cloudy days and inactive at night. However, any stored energy in your solar battery can be used during these times. Plus, your system will automatically switch to grid power when needed.

Do solar panels work well in all Australian climates?
Yes, solar panels are designed to perform in a range of Australian climates, from the heat of Queensland to the cooler temperatures of Victoria. Arkana Energy’s quality panels and custom solutions ensure you get optimal performance year-round.

I have shading, will solar still work?
Partial shading can affect the performance of solar panels. However, Arkana Energy offers advanced solutions like microinverters that minimise the impact of shading, ensuring you still reap the benefits of solar energy. As part of our free initial assessment we can assess the shading, recommend solutions and model the impact to energy production and return on investment from the shading – to make sure it still makes sense to get solar.

What happens in a blackout?
In the event of a blackout, solar systems with batteries can continue to provide power and use some appliances in the home. Batteries have a maximum output when in blackout mode and thus us not usually enough to power the entire house, however they will allow you to power certain circuits such as lights and your fridge. Without a battery, most solar systems will not power your home if the grid power goes down.

What’s the difference between on-grid/grid-connection solar and off-grid solar?
On-grid solar systems connect to the national electricity grid, providing a backup power source when your solar panels or battery can’t meet your energy needs. In contrast, off-grid systems are not connected to the grid and rely entirely on solar energy and battery storage for power. Whether you’re aiming for full self-sufficiency or you live in an area with a reliable grid connection, Arkana Energy can guide you through both options and help you make an informed choice tailored to your specific requirements.

What happens if I move house after installing solar?
A solar installation can actually increase your home’s value. If you move, the system can either be transferred to the new homeowner, or, in some cases, be moved to your new location.

I rent my house, can I get solar?
Providing the landlord is happy for you to install solar and you intend on staying there for at least 3 years, there is no reason why you can’t get solar. You’ll just need the property owner’s consent. Arkana Energy offers flexible solutions that benefit both tenants and property owners, making solar a win-win investment.

Can I get solar for free?
Sadly solar is not free. The government will pay a portion of your solar system and the rest must be paid for by you, however, there are options to finance the remaining balance. The money you save on power usually covers the repayments. If you can afford electricity then you can afford solar.
